Healthy Chats for Girls

A sensitive, yet fun, discussion about Puberty & Growing up for Mothers & Daughters (ages 9-12)

Our Healthy Chats seminars are open to mothers, aunts, grandmothers, step-mothers, mentors, and the treasured girls in their lives. Healthy Chats enables you to take advantage of the physical changes of puberty as an opportunity to learn, share, and be proactive in every aspect of a girl’s life.

Healthy Chats for Girls Agenda:

Introduction: Our instructors introduce themselves, overview the format of the class, and give any other necessary announcements. Both mothers and daughters have an opportunity to introduce each other.

Part I

Consists of an approximate 30 minute slide presentation on the stages of puberty. These are:

  • Growth
  • Breast Development
  • Body Hair/Odor
  • Mood Swings/ Emotional Changes
  • Menstruation – Having your Period

These concepts are presented in a fun, sensitive manner that stresses the normal process of growth and development that girls experience. There is also a brief, age-appropriate review about the facts of life, “the birds and the bees.” The basic information at this age includes:

1. Where do babies come from?
2. How to they get out?

Prior to a snack break, mothers and daughters have the opportunity to anonymously write questions and hand them in on the provided cards. These cards are collected and reviewed during the second half of the workshop. Moms are also asked to complete an inspirational sentence for their daughters to be read back at the end of the seminar by the instructor.

During the break, the instructor will gather with the mothers and review whether or not to continue the story in part 2 of the seminar as it pertains to:

3. How do babies get in? / What is Sex?

All mothers must be in agreement if they want the instructor to provide this explanation. To help them decide, the instructor reviews what she will be saying with the group of mothers.

Part II

In addition to addressing questions placed in the question box, the group is encouraged to participate by contributing personal anecdotes, etc. One of the goals of the seminar is to show these young girls that their mothers are their best resource. During this half of the presentation, the group is shown different sanitary products (no specific affiliations to any company), how to use and dispose of them, etc.

If the mothers have agreed upon it, the instructor will conclude the seminar with the story of conception (what is sex.)

Each girl receives a “Growing Up” gift bag containing sample products, the booklet “Puberty for Girls”, a journal, and other token items.

The seminar concludes by reading back to the group the often touching statements that the mothers have written on their cards.

Dear Dr. de Freitas,
I can’t thank you enough for the seminar yesterday afternoon for Nicole and me. It was a very special afternoon and a very special topic that you explained just perfectly. You made the “subject” easy for the girls to understand while taking the awkwardness out of it. It is a day Nicole and I will treasure forever.

Sincerely, Carey

Dr. de Freitas presented her Mother-Daughter seminar to our 5th grade Girl Scout troop at one of our homes. I believe the comfortable environment and the age and maturity of the girls helped us to have a productive and meaningful presentation. Dr. de Freitas has very kind and understanding nature, which was very helpful when being presented material which was very sensitive to most of our girls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Above all, thank you for your interest in our Healthy Chats for Girls mother-daughter seminar. You belong to a group of unique moms who want to introduce their daughters to this rite of passage in a manner that will be meaningful for both of you. Read what other mothers have said under “Testimonials” after having attended a seminar with their daughters. Below, please find some of the more frequently asked questions.

How do I set up a Mother-Daughter Seminar for my daughter?

It is best to set up a seminar with a group of mothers and daughters in your immediate community. This can be the Girl Scouts troop, their sports team, or their classmates at school. Look under “Calendar of Events” to see which dates are set for general public seminars.

Do I need a minimum/maximum of participants?

Yes, we do ask for a minimum of 10 “mother-daughter” participants. Having this minimum amount of participants allows for more participation and the girls feel more comfortable as they are not “on-the-spot” the whole time. The maximum number is 20 “couples” so it doesn’t become cumbersome and everyone can participate. Additionally, due to our scheduling/time limitations for such engagments, we look to reach as many groups as humanly possible!

Where do we meet?

We can meet at a home, a recreational center, the local school, or church meeting room. Just about anyplace that can accommodate the group size. We will come to you within a reasonable radius of the San Diego area. More educators are being added outside of San Diego; ask for availability.

What do I need to have available for you?

We do not require anything other than directions to the location, the date and time, and an accurate head count as we do prepare “gift bags” for the girls and don’t want to miss anyone. We bring our own screen, laptop, etc.

What do I need to have available for the group?

Many of the mothers bring a potluck of healthy snacks to share during the break period.

How long are the seminars?

The seminars are approximately 2 to 2 ½ hours long depending on the number of questions, snack time, etc. It truly helps if everyone arrives a bit early to get the socializing and energy out before settling down for the chat.

What is the fee and when do we pay?

The fee is $60.00 per mother-daughter couple. This includes a cute gift bag that all girls receive at the end. This bag has token items that are either practical or symbolic of the event. Girl Scouts also receive our exclusive patch for their uniform. The net value of the bag is approximately $10.00. If there is a twin, sibling, or extra person attending, there is an additional fee of $30.

Fees can be collected at the time of the seminar. We do ask that the minimum (10 mother-daughter couples) attendance is met.

Checks can be made payable to: Dr. de Freitas. We do send periodic newsletters, so moms are given an opportunity to sign-in with an e-mail address.
